«‘R’ du large» - Gyslain Bertholon, Maxime Bourgeaux

Place Chavanelle, 42000 Saint-Étienne
This installation by plastic artists Gyslain Bertholon and Maxime Bourgeaux presents a gathering of pigeons standing still, in silence.
Made of cast iron and metallised zinc, this group of pigeons symbolises the relation between the individual and the crowd.
"150 cast-iron pigeons stand on the ground. All in the same serene posture, they seem to adhere to an invisible circle. This circle, revealed by their presence, corresponds to the personal space around each individual ("r").
The pigeon, iconic urban animal, here represents the crowd of inhabitants in a city. All the birds are grey. Only one, coloured gold, stands out. This pigeon acts as a symbol of each person's capacity for individuality (=how to be alone in the midst of a crowd of fellow-creatures). " [text by Ghislain Bertholon]
