Perched on a rocky spur, the fortress of Couzan dominates the Lignon and the village of Sail-sous-Couzan in the Monts du Forez. On a clear day, you can climb up and enjoy an incredible view of the Forez plain and the Monts du Lyonnais.
A remarkable medieval building
Couzan remains a formidable monument of feudal military architecture. Many vestiges have survived the passage of time: the high walls, the citadel, the Tour des Arrêts, the old dungeons, the captaincy and the farmyard.
Its Romanesque chapel (12th century) is even classified as a historical monument!
On the way out
On your way out (or in), you can stop by the village of Sail-sous-Couzan to taste its ferruginous water or an artisanal beer at La Canaille depending on your mood. For the greediest, don’t miss the famous boudin pâtissier of the Maison Durand in Boën-sur-Lignon!
